You want a pet! So now what?

So you’ve decided to get a pet, that’s great pets are cool, now to find the right one.
There are several ways to get a pet, here are a few:

1)    The humane society is a great place to look. They take in animals that have no home then the animal is given a physical, is desexed to avoid unwanted babies, given a bath and evaluated for aggression. After they receive a clean bill of health they are offered for adoption at very reasonable rates, usually 50.00 to 75.00
.
2)    A reputable breeder. There are advantages to going this route in that you know who your pet’s parents are. Breeders often have AKC registrations for their animals (in the case of dogs) and for cats, birds, and other animals there are organizations that maintain there own data based registries. This is a good option if you want to breed your animal. Breeders have usually gotten the baby animals their first set of vaccinations and vet physicals. Prices range any where from 50.00 to 1000.00 and more depending on the bloodline and area in which you live. Please be sure that your breeder has a good reputation in your community to ensure your new pet is healthy and not inbred. The veterinarians in your area should be able to provide you with a list of breeders in your area.

3)    A pet store. Depending on what type of pet you are looking for there are several good pet stores all over the country. This would be another good time to seek your vet’s advice because he or she will steer you in the direction of a store that has healthy animals and clean sanitary conditions in the store. Use your eyes and ears as well as the vets advice, do the animals in the store appear healthy, are the cages clean, does the holding area smell clean this is a good way to decide if you wish to purchase a pet from them.

The most important thing about getting a new pet is making sure it’s the right kind of pet for you, your lifestyle and your living environment. Ask your self how much time I have to spend training, exercising and loving a pet. If you are gone all day you may not want a puppy since they require lots of time and attention to train. Try to put your self in his shoes will he or she be lonely or do will they have lots of attention. It is important to make sure your new pet is the right one for you so you will both be happy.
